Bad breath can often be embarrasing and cause lack of #selfconfidence and sometimes even cause #anxiety  Bad breath, or #halitosis , is common in people of all ages and can be a result of our own lifestyle choices and habits, poor oral hygiene or as a warning sign for health issues.

You can take steps to prevent bad breath, treat it at home or if it’s persistent, then a trip to your dentist may also be needed to investigate.

But what causes #badbreath?

▪️#Smoking or chewing tobacco
▪️Bad oral hygiene – build-up of plaque or food particles between the teeth
▪️Certain foods such as onions, garlic, spices and strong smelling foods / drinks
▪️Mouth infections like #gingivitis, periodontal and gum disease
▪️Dry mouth – saliva helps cleanse the mouth and wash away bacteria. Morning breath occurs from dry mouth and is normal, but some people also suffer from chronic dry mouth where your saliva glands won’t work properly.
▪️Some medications can cause bad breath
▪️Some conditions such as acid reflux or GERD

How is bad breath treated?

▪️The main thing to consider is keeping your mouth, teeth and tongue clean
▪️Brush at least twice a day
▪️Brush or scrape your tongue
▪️Floss daily
▪️Use antibacterial toothpaste or mouthwash
▪️Chew sugar free gum after eating strong smelling foods
▪️Crunchy veg like carrot sticks or apples can help clean your teeth and produce saliva
▪️Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco
▪️Don’t eat or drink lots of sugary / sticky foods and liquids
▪️Don’t brush too hard

See your dentist if;

▪️Bad breath persists after treating it yourself
▪️You see blood when brushing
▪️You feel pain in your teeth or gums

Regular check-ups, at least twice a year, can help keep on top of good #oralhygiene and tackle bad breath.
