Have you still got yours?

Wisdom ToothWisdom teeth are the last teeth to come through, most often during late teens or early twenties and appear right at the back of your mouth. Most people have 4 and they usually grow through the gums, during your final growth phase.

Why we do not know, but we all have different experiences with wisdom teeth, some get them through easily, but many, suffer with pain or dental problems including overcrowding or impaction (wisdom tooth pushes into gum or another tooth) which often results in tooth decay and infection.  If you have yours and they came through without causing any trouble, you are lucky, we see many patients who struggle, and we are hear for you.

Also remember that not everyone has wisdom teeth. Some people develop them, and others don’t.

Can we remove them?
Wisdom teeth can be removed, however it would only be considered if they are causing problems, or if they are damaging other teeth. The extra set of molars can put pressure on other teeth around them which can cause pain and decay. Wisdom teeth, unlike other teeth, do not provide a lot of biting or chewing power and for this reason it is not necessary to replace them once they have been removed.

It is important to be aware of these teeth, reach right back to clean them and to act if you are feeling pain, swelling or experiencing redness or tenderness. Our dentists are very much on hand to assess them before they cause more problems.
